Artist Statement

In my work I want to explore a new way of seeing between the Eastern and the Western worlds. Perspective is crucial. My current paintings and drawings focus on the place where I am currently located. When I walk down the street, I can feel a lot of different emotions from the buildings, the trees, and the sky that I use to build upon my work. I’m from China and have come to study in Chicago. Everything is fresh and exciting to me as I love and enjoy my new life as an artist with a studio and a home in a foreign country. I find myself using portable materials such as colorful oil pastels and paper to paint and draw the city as image dairies. The colors seem to align with the strong emotions that I feel, as I roam through the city. I also use the window as a way to crop out what I can see or imagine from that point of view—using the light of day and night.
