As a complement to the narrative and visual information presented through the Chicago Art Galleries Project (CAGP) website, supplementary resources were created to provide researchers with additional content and context.
One of these resources is a general survey of Chicago art galleries and gallery-like spaces. While not meant to be exhaustive, this dataset is nevertheless the fruit of a thorough review of print and web sources. In order to limit this work to a scope that would be feasible within the constraints of this grant project, the following parameters were used to guide data collection for this survey:
- Location: Includes galleries which are or had been at some time located within the municipal boundaries of the City of Chicago.
- Gallery type: No exclusions were made; includes commercial, non-commercial, not-for-profit, cooperative and undetermined types.
- Date range: No exclusions were made.
- Subject: Includes galleries showing fine art, folk art, architecture and design.
The CAGP Team welcomes both corrections and additions to this list. Please contact us here, and provide as much of the following information as is possible:
- Gallery name(s)
- Location(s)
- Date of founding; dates of operation
- Important names (e.g., owners, founders)
- Brief description (e.g., scope of work, focus, notable work)
- Related website or other resources
