{"id":1050,"date":"2003-04-17T02:56:32","date_gmt":"2003-04-17T08:56:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.saic.edu\/cate\/?p=1050"},"modified":"2025-01-10T09:04:00","modified_gmt":"2025-01-10T15:04:00","slug":"stillhere-and-perseverance-and-how-to-develop-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.saic.edu\/cate\/2003\/04\/17\/stillhere-and-perseverance-and-how-to-develop-it\/","title":{"rendered":"Still\/Here and Perseverance and How to Develop It"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>Thursday, April 17, 2003, 8pm<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>STILL\/HERE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">2000, Chris Harris, USA, 60 min, 16mm<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">and<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>PERSEVERANCE AND HOW TO DEVELOP IT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">2002, Jenny Perlin, USA, 14 min, 16mm<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><em>Directors in person!<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Department of Film, Video &amp; New Media is pleased to welcome back alumni Chris Harris and Jenny Perlin to present their most recent films.\u00a0 Inspired in part by Eugene Aget\u2019s photographs of Paris, <em>Still\/Here<\/em> is Harris\u2019s meditation on the vast landscape of ruins and vacant lots that constitute much of north St. Louis, an area that is home to many working class and working poor African Americans.\u00a0 Though such subject matter has traditionally been approached through the conventions of documentary realism, <em>Still\/Here<\/em> obliquely acknowledges these conventions even as it interrupts them with a series of self-reflexive breakdowns, erasures and gaps.\u00a0 Perlin\u2019s <em>Perseverance and How to Develop It<\/em> investigates the connections between depression, self-help, controlled environments and success in the US.\u00a0 Perlin pulls together interviews, recreations of people acting out their neurosis, and rare archival footage of union riots from the 1940\u2019s, as well as texts from self-help books and Freud, to create ironic connections between a success oriented workforce then and now.
