Image courtesy the artist.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>\u201cBruce Bickford is a genius!\u201d \u2014 Frank Zappa<\/p>\n<p>Enchanted gardens, epic battles, and creatures that morph out of roiling\u00a0landscapes of clay are but a few of the visions that make up legendary\u00a0animator Bruce Bickford\u2019s world\u2014one of metamorphosis, destruction, and\u00a0regeneration. Best known for his work with Frank Zappa\u2014<em>Baby Snakes<\/em> (1979) and <em>The Amazing Mr. Bickford<\/em> (1987)\u2014Bickford\u2019s stunning and surreal animations have influenced generations of artists, filmmakers, and musicians. \u00a0This\u00a0evening\u2019s program features a rare theatrical screening of his 1988\u00a0tour-de-force, <em>Prometheus\u2019 Garden<\/em>;\u00a0recent pencil-line\u00a0animations, including the hypnotic\u00a0<em>The Comic That Frenches Your Mind <\/em>(2007); and a collection of rarely-seen\u00a0animated sequences and fragments spanning Bickford\u2019s prodigious career, featuring\u00a0a not-to-be-missed live soundtrack by musicians Jeff Parker (Tortoise, The Relatives) and Frank\u00a0Rosaly (Viscous). \u00a0Special thanks to Peter Burr for his\u00a0generous assistance with this program. Bruce Bickford, 1980-2010, USA, multiple formats, ca. 90 min (plus discussion).<\/p>\n<p><strong>BRUCE BICKFORD<\/strong> (1947, Seattle, WA) began animating clay in the summer of 1964 at the age of 17. He graduated from high school in 1965 and engaged in military service from 1966 to 1969. Upon his return, he resumed animation and began experimenting with line animation.\u00a0 He met Frank Zappa in 1973 and worked for him from 1974-1980, producing imagery for <em>Baby Snakes<\/em> (1979), <em>The Dub Room Special<\/em> (1985), <em>Video From Hell <\/em>(1980), and <em>The Amazing Mr. Bickford<\/em> (1987). Afterwards, he returned to Seattle and resumed animating, mostly his own personal work.
