Over the last decade and a half, a generation of independent animators have redefined \u201cJapanese animation.\u201d Organized by the animation scholar and curator Nobuaki Doi, this program showcases the landscape of independent Japanese animation, including Mirai Mizue\u2019s stunning, hand-drawn cellular phantasmagoria,Wonder <\/i>(2014), Atsushi Wada\u2019s stylized and surreal look at everyday life, A Pig\u2019s Eye<\/i> (2010), Kei Oyama\u2019s unsettling photo-collage of adolescent angst, Handsoap<\/i>(2008), and Yoko Kuno\u2019s ethereal and elegiac Airy Me<\/i> (2012), originally released on dream pop singer Cuushe\u2019s debut album Red Rocket Telepathy<\/i>. Also on the program are Yoriko Mizushiri\u2019s Futon<\/i> (2011), Ryo Hirano\u2019s Holiday<\/i> (2011), Masanobu Hiraoka\u2019s Land<\/i> (2013), ShiShi Yamazaki\u2019s Moonlit Night & Opal<\/i> (2015), and Yoko Yuki\u2019s Zdravstvuite!<\/i> (2015).<\/p>\n

Nobuaki Doi<\/a> (Tokyo, Japan) is the festival director of New Chitose Airport International Animation Festival<\/a>, the world\u2019s first film festival in an airport. He is also the President\/CEO of New Deer, Inc<\/a>, a distribution company specializing in independent animation. He was one of the co-founders of CALF<\/a>, a trailblazing distribution collective for independent animation, and editor of the Japanese e-zine Animations Creators and Critics<\/a>. His articles and reviews can be found in the publications of the International Animated Film Association (ASIFA).<\/a><\/p>\n
