In recent years, award-winning Colombian filmmaker Camilo Restrepo<\/strong> has gained a reputation for striking explorations of personal and political trauma, survival, and resistance. Featuring R\u00e9union Island singer Christine Salem<\/strong>,\u00a0Cilaos<\/em>\u00a0(2016) uses the incendiary rhythms of maloya, ritual music derived from slave songs, to tell the story of a woman driven to meet her estranged father after he dies. Mirroring these themes,\u00a0La Bouche<\/em>\u00a0(2017) stars Guinean percussion master Mohamed Bangoura<\/strong> as a father who is called upon to avenge the murder of his daughter\u2014a story loosely based on his own. Restrepo takes up the enduring effects of colonialism and paramilitary conflict in South America, particularly Colombia, in\u00a0Tropic Pocket<\/em>\u00a0(2011) and\u00a0La impresi\u00f3n de una guerra<\/em>\u00a0(2015), which draws parallels between the deadly \u201cinvisible borders\u201d gangs have carved across the city of Medell\u00edn, the tattoos of prisoners, and the color of the Medell\u00edn River, permanently dyed with textile factory pollution.\u00a0In French, R\u00e9union Creole, Susu, and Spanish with English subtitles.\u00a02011\u201317, Colombia, France, ca 70 min + discussion<\/em><\/p>\n

Camilo Restrepo<\/strong>\u00a0was born in Medell\u00edn, Colombia, and is currently based in Paris. He is a member of L\u2019Abominable, an artist-run film laboratory. His films have been selected for international film festivals including Directors\u2019 Fortnight, Cannes, France; Toronto International Film Festival; New York Film Festival; Viennale, Vienna; International Film Festival Rotterdam, the Netherlands; Berlin Critics\u2019 Week; Belo Horizonte International Short Film Festival, Brazil; Festival Internacional de Cine de Gij\u00f3n, Spain; Antofadocs, Antofagasta, Chile; Zinebi International Festival of Documentary and Short Films, Bilbao, Spain; and the Locarno Festival, Switzerland, where he has twice won the Pardino d\u2019Argento award.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
