Courtesy of the artist and Tanya Bonakdar Gallery.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Self-described as \u201clow-tech, stand-up comedies,\u201d Wong Ping\u2019s animations and installations combine dark humor with nuanced social commentary.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>ABOUT<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Wong Ping<\/strong>\u00a0was born in Hong Kong and received his BA from Curtin University in Perth, Australia in 2005. In 2018, he was the recipient of the inaugural Camden Art Centre\u2019s Emerging Artist Prize, and in 2019, he was one of the winners of the Ammodo Tiger Short Competition at the 48th International Film Festival Rotterdam. Wong has completed a residency at the Centre for Chinese \u00adContemporary Art (2015). Solo exhibitions include\u00a0<em>Heart Digger,<\/em>\u00a0Camden Arts Centre, London (2019);\u00a0<em>Golden Shower<\/em>, Kunsthalle Basel, Switzerland (2019);\u00a0<em>Who\u2019s the Daddy<\/em>, CAPRI, Germany; and\u00a0<em>Jungle of Desire,<\/em>\u00a0Things That Can Happen, Hong Kong.\u00a0His work has been featured in important group exhibitions such as<em>\u00a0One Hand Clapping<\/em>, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (2018);<em>\u00a02018 Triennial: Songs for Sabotage<\/em>, New Museum, New York (2018);\u00a0<em>XO State Dark: Aristophanes,<\/em>\u00a0Arts Centre Melbourne (2017);\u00a0<em>RareKind China,<\/em>\u00a0Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art, Manchester (2016);\u00a0<em>Mobile M+: Moving Images<\/em>, M+, Hong Kong (2015); and\u00a0<em>Essential Matters<\/em>, Borusan Contemporary, Istanbul (2015). Wong\u2019s animation films have been presented at numerous international festivals in Belgium, the United Kingdom, Mexico, and Australia. Wong\u2019s work is held in several permanent collections including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; M+, Hong Kong; KADIST, Paris\/San Francisco; and Fosun Foundation, Shanghai, among others.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Orianna Cacchione<\/strong>\u00a0is the curator of global contemporary art at the Smart Museum of Art. Her curatorial practice is committed to expanding the canon of contemporary art to respond to the global circulations of art and ideas.
