Artist Statement

Bonbon Fan’s artwork presents what happens around her life and expresses her experiences, imagination, and feelings. Using contemporary design installations, the work integrates history and fashion innovation by contrasting and balancing classical aesthetics. Fan’s work is a probe between the artist and her audience into the circle of self-denial re-evaluation and self-approval — she enjoys wounding her old perspective of the world and infecting the wounds with new ones. The innermost universe of her mind, every time she’s encountered with a new influence, she exploded it and rebuilt it into a different form.

Although Fan made the artwork according to her perspective of the world, everyone has a different point of view of the world they are living and everyone has opinions and prejudice towards it, the artwork provides a point of view of people’s lives and serves as a peeking-hole from another angle of view. Through installations Fan explores expressions of the innermost changes that occur in her life from studying to traveling and self-growth. People who grew up in the same period of time as the artist, the 90s, shares similar memories of music, TV shows and advertisements, and it has the strongest struck of responsive chord in them. The pieces of work are interactive with the audience. The art pieces are not fragile but instead strong enough to be wore or played and there are clues left for inviting the audience to touch them, creating entirely new works. By interacting with the pieces, the audience gets the joy of distorting and rebuilding a piece of artwork and being able to control the aesthetic shape of it with their ideas — it is an important part of the audience engagement because the innermost changing should be personal and customized individually.
