Misha Neal & Justice Henderson – Meet Me Where I Am

Meet Me Where I Am is an exhibition curated by Misha Neal and Justice Henderson. The purpose of the exhibition is to facilitate connections between the six artists, and by sharing their narratives with the public through their work, the exhibition transforms the viewer’s experience by engaging in the topic of how the intersections of race, gender, sexuality, and age speak to the larger narrative of the Black experience. Other major themes presented by the artists include critiquing the perception of the Black body in Western culture, challenging socially constructed ideas about Black masculinity and Black femininity, confronting history as a way to inform the present, and finding opportunities to open up the space for Black Joy.

Misha and Justice also developed a free take-away zine available online and during the in-person exhibition that artists extended their advice, knowledge, and experience in the field to guide emerging Black artists. This project can be reviewed online at the website of the exhibition. Misha and Justice would also like to thank 062 for providing the space for the first Different Shades exhibition. Also thanks to GoFundMe donors whose donations went directly to the artists featured in the exhibition to support their practice. Their generosity is greatly appreciated, and the commitment to creating a safer, creative space for Black artists could not be done without their participation.
