Dan Price
Dan Price has been teaching at SAIC since 2009. He took his sabbatical during the 2022 Academic Year.
Looking, making, and using go together for me. I am a noticer, and I bring an intensity for engaging the natural environment as well as the human-built world. Both of these sites serve as inspiration for my art practice. My work celebrates the handmade, and includes a taste for adventure. In making sculpture, I often fabricate my own tools to complete a project, and though I differentiate between the tools and the art, I wonder what a loosening of the boundaries between these categories might mean. The works that I present here are examples of this loosening, and exist as embodiments of what it could mean to work through a question with the logics of material, the limitations of the natural environment and the power of imagination.
Dan Price holds a BA in Sculpture from Colorado College and a MFA in Sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design. In the time between his academic degrees, Price taught high school Art and English in rural South Africa and subsequently spent two years as a Core Fellow at the Penland School of Craft where he studied bookbinding, blacksmithing and glass casting. Dan has exhibited his sculptural work at White Columns and Triple Candie in New York, at 2739 Edwin Gallery in Detroit, at the Kennedy Museum in Athens, Ohio and at A-Space in Los Angeles. He has shown his art videos at Propeller Gallery in Toronto, and at the Musee D’art Contemporain in Lyon, France. Price has been artist in residence at venues around the world, including Kohler, Wisconsin; Fiskars, Finland; Art Omi, New York; European Ceramic Workshop, Netherlands, and many others. In 2017, 2018 and 2019, Price was invited as a distinguished visiting professor at Tokyo Geidei, University of Tokyo in Japan, where he and Alan Labb collaborated with Japanese colleagues to oversee and produce three separate exhibitions in the Kagawa Prefecture, one of which was included in the Setouchi Trienniale.
