“SWALLOWED”

Concept | Imagine Venice 10 years from now, most likely it will be completely submerged in water. Sea levels have been increasing constantly and it is estimated that at least 14 U.S. coastal cities will no longer exist places such as Miami, FL, New York City, NY, New Orleans, Louisiana, San Diego, CA. But what if it was Venice, Italy a magical cluster of 118 small islands[1] that are separated by canals and linked by 400 bridges. This year I will be focusing on creating a collection based on Venice 10 years from now completely vanished into the Venetian Lagoon. It will be a memorial of Venice with artifacts and emotions from Venice I believe should never be forgotten. I will write a Venetian fairy tale about these artifacts found in Venice. This collection will be about remembering this fantastical city that no longer exists. It is loosely inspired by my trip to Venice and Damien Hirst’s, “Shipwrecked” exhibition I had the pleasure of seeing at the Venice Biennale.
