I am an artist from a small town located in western Kentucky. During a turbulent year, I have found it pertinent to react to this resurgence of civil rights activism within American society. My current work revolves around my conflicting identity of African American. I am looking deeper into what it means to be a Black citizen from the Southern U.S. Everything that I have been taught is being questioned through the reimagination of materials and symbols that surround me. These objects are fueled by the emotions felt when confronting the occurrence of police altercations that end with the death of a Black American.
‘Potent’ has become an important word to my practice. Each cotton garment is strung onto a chain and hung from the ceiling with rope. Where I’m from these materials are common, but within the context of the work, the potency of them steal the spotlight.
