These are some of my most recent projects I have been working on. I have been focusing on using sustainable materials including plastic bags, bottle caps, and various plastic packaging while incorporating different techniques from weaving and embroidery. In my practice, I enjoy putting things together, as well incorporating as much color as I can.
In my practice, many of the concepts and ideas I have created are based on memories, things I have seen, learned, or admired. There are so many things to discover and learn, and I enjoy pushing the boundaries of what is currently there and taking it to another level.
Last semester I took a textile class, and I learned many different techniques. One that stood out to me the most was basket cord weaving. In this class, we learned how to make these cords with plastic bags. The plastic bag served as a substitute for rope, and you can use any type of yarn to wrap the plastic bags. Then I had an idea that I could make my own fabric this way, and I made one of the pieces from my drawn collection with 400 plastic bags that I had gathered with the help of my friends and family. The freedom of being able to choose the colors of yarn and what shapes I could make was exciting because there were very few limitations to what patterns or designs I could make, and it made me enjoy the process of exploring a new concept that I had found interesting. It was nice to not know what the end product was going to look like, and that made me more determined to see what the outcome would be. I didn’t know how flexible or heavy it would be, and learning the boundaries of how this technique could be used was a lot of fun. I hope to push this technique even further as well as create new ideas in the future to come.
