Artist Statement
As everything is temporary, deterioration serves as a fundamental factor that defines our world. I found fascination with decay in seeing how many forms it takes; from weathering, rusting, burning, rotting, aging, and breaking. Similar to how a snake sheds its skin, when something deteriorates, it reveals it’s truth and changes form. Looking at the present world, I see it slowly crumbling. Our melting globe now carries abandoned infrastructures, blazing fires, and suffocates with the toxins of our mass civilization. My white cotton garment embodies the deterioration we all experience and witness. Using methods of burning, rusting, tearing, and puncturing, I generated designs that emulate wear and tear. My color scheme was developed and created with the light of fire and the rust of formerly gleaming metal; showcasing how even substances so radiant can have the potential to destroy. I leave my garments not fully destroyed, hinting at the beauty and process that this destructive phenomenon has.
