“Set in Stone” While my past is permanent and unchangeable, my future is not set. With my Chinese name as Wong Ying, their separate characters mean king and luster of gems. These garments reflect myself while giving the viewer an experience of beauty and luxury. This ongoing collection allows me to reflect on my past and who I have become throughout my four years here while exploring the potential that lies ahead of me.

This pair of platform pumps plays with the idea of comfort and discomfort as I strive to create a connection with my past memories and my Chinese American identity. The bottom of the heel is a stamp of my baby photo, a reminder of where I started, with each step I take.

In Chinese culture, jade brings success and symbolizes heaven. As a child, I was given a jade bangle, matching and connecting me with my grandmother even through a language barrier. Although my grandmothers are no longer with me now, there will always be a connection between us. I will never forget those who shaped me and where I started. This dress has imprints of my baby photo, stamped on by a pair of heels I’ve made. It shows that although I’ve started on my own path, they will always be a part of who I am.

Pearls are formed through irritation and are a symbol of wisdom. In Chinese culture, it is often a dragon holding a pearl symbolizing a chasing of enlightenment. Born in the year of the dragon and with Megan meaning pearl, I am both the dragon and the pearl. Throughout my time here I have experienced irritation that has allowed me to become wiser and it has been a journey of enlightenment. The darker colors and frayed layers starting at the bottom of the skirt represent the inside of a pearl, coming up and becoming the shiny completed outside of the pearl.

Megan Wong is a Chinese American fashion and accessories designer, born and raised in San Francisco, California. She graduates this spring from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and will receive her BFA. Wong focuses on how garments are markers of cultural identity to discuss her experiences of being Chinese American. With her work, she hopes to express her experiences of the world and find an understanding with the viewer. She explores how textures can create emotions and how certain elements create tension or relief, allowing viewers to experience the emotions that she feels
