The garments I make relate to the body at some intersection of movement, protection, and decoration. They examine how comfort is required to move through space with some ease, but what does comfort entail? What makes me most comfortable in my living room will not be the same set of variables that make me most comfortable at school. How can we really communicate when the definitions of words change moment to moment even on an individual level? We need individualized garments to support our bodies and the environments they exist in. These are functional garments for non-binary folks, women, and men. Clothes that reject the notion of singularity, they can be reversed inside and out, front to back to tessellate with the wearer through time.
My treatment of textiles is informed by the women before me, honoring their contributions to computer development and space exploration; no part of history is left untouched by women’s hands. Communication is connection even when it is fraught with misunderstandings. Mistakes are integral to language and conceptual development. Each of us understands definitions differently, and there is no way to know which method of communication will feel most in line with the definition you hold. I have no idea what will translate for you and if it’s important to me that we feel the same or just that you feel something in the moment with me. Maybe it’s more about togetherness and that in itself is communication enough. So I throw things out in melody and word and fabric full of seams, watching you and waiting for you to join me in feeling.
