Mireya Barrientes

Inspired by the migrant work of my late grandfather and my Mexican American heritage, this project is a reflection of my familial roots represented through their work as laborers. Thus, the role of the project is to not only showcase the hard truth of societal neglect towards those who work in labor, but more importantly, to reappropriate the negative narratives projected upon those who serve these roles. Furthermore, I decided to portray these ideas through the recreation of the Zoot Suit, a garment deemed unpatriotic due to its service towards the representation of the Mexican American Resistance in the 1943 Zoot Suit Riots. Therefore, the direction of my garment is to project ideals of strength and pride, rather than struggle and pity which it can be infamously conceived as.
