I work with photography, video and installation. My work examines memory and translation, using the photograph as an opportunity to reconstruct past and imagined experiences. The images draw inspiration from the lighting in Spanish still lifes and the gestures seen in Renaissance paintings. I construct each environment from fragmented memories and mistranslations – striving to create images that cannot be. Within these fabricated spaces, topics of queerness, family, domesticity, and the gaze are brought up.
Growing up between La Paz, Madrid and the Washington DC area, I had to shift between different cultures and languages. Through my work I have learned how to concentrate on what is gained between these shifts, rather than what is lost.
