Sage Mtahtah

Master of Fine Arts in Studio, Fiber and Material Studies

Sage Mtahtah is a weaver from Knoxville, Tennessee. Raised in Southern Appalachia, various fiber techniques such as quilting were learned from family. With money being scarce, the use of fabric and materials from places such as the Dollar Store, Joann, and Walmart became a key component of her practice. These novelty materials reference contradictory aspects of the American middle class – cheap and alluring. Through structural and material exploration on the loom, the topic of unicorns is expanded and stories about these historical beasts are reconfigured to reveal them as a middle class icon.
