Jiaming You is a painter who lives and works in Chicago. They are currently pursuing their MFA in Painting and Drawing at SAIC and will graduate in May 2022. They received their BS at UW, Madison double-majoring in Psychology and Art (2018) and Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Painting and Drawing at SAIC (2019). Jiaming is the recipient of the SAIC International Graduate Student Scholarship and Oxbow Merit Scholarship. Jiaming’s work depicts the juxtaposition of physical and mental spaces with various social and psychological topics in contemporary life involved in the discussion. Their work has been shown in Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, and New York. Outside their studio practices, Jiaming works as a Graduate Curatorial Assistant at the Department of Exhibitions, SAIC since 2020.

As a non-binary Asian American immigrant who was born in Shanghai, a metropolitan environment where youngsters are exposed to the western commercial and cultural influences on daily-basis without the need to travel abroad, I recognized that I’m a product of globalization and there’s no longer an absolute association between one’s personal philosophy, lifestyle, and cultural perspective and their geographic origin. I discovered enormous fluidity in the self-recognition of my identity, which is more massive than what can be contained in a first-person autobiographical narrative. Their social, historical context and commercial environment should also be taken into consideration. Thus, layering different image-making strategies, both additive and reductive, for example, the use of inkjet or laser prints, image transfers, sanding and bleaching, drawing and painting, ready-mades, lighting equipment, etc., all find their way into my process. The work depicts the juxtaposition of physical and mental spaces. Social and psychological topics in contemporary life discussed in my work include isolation, inversion, misplacement, disjunction between selfhood and social structure, sexuality and aggressiveness, and various intense mental conditions.
