Kate Kim is a Korean artist. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from New York University with two minors in Web Programming/Applications and Studio Art. She is currently a Master of Fine Arts candidate in Painting and Drawing at the School of Art Institute of Chicago.
Kim’s practice embodies the complexities of her thoughts and feelings, which are beyond verbal communication. Her artworks reflect the pleasure and anxiety of situations she experiences daily. She continues to immerse herself in the art to sharpen and focus her interest in the duality of languages, cultures, personalities, experiences, and identities in her life. She speaks two languages; she learned Korean as a child and English as an adult. Yet, she wants to bypass both languages and freely express herself in ways that might be difficult in one language and impossible in another. She is the translator, the mediator of different cultural conditions and expectations, a conflict that cannot resolve, but only transmission in her artwork.
Colors have always fascinated Kim for her practice. As an intuition-based artist, she makes decisions spontaneously by reacting to colors, shapes, gestures, marks, and space in her paintings. She believes that they are her response and sensation about life and the world.
