Kate Morrick

Master of Fine Arts in Studio, Fiber and Material Studies

Morrick’s work lies in an exploratory space between textile traditions. She is a weaver who builds monumental looms from 2x4s, a spinner who coats their yarns in paper pulp, a papermaker who rarely presses sheets. Through her unique collision of woven and nonwoven processes, she strives to transform conventionally flaccid and fluid textile materials into ossified and precarious states of both being and becoming—her sculptural materialities always residing between notions of tension and release, permanence, and potential.

Morrick earned her B.S. in Textile and Apparel Design from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and A.A.S. in Textile Development and Marketing from the Fashion Institute of Technology. She has held numerous roles in Fabric Research & Development in the fashion industry and is currently an M.F.A. candidate in the Fiber and Material Studies Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) where she is a recipient of the New Artist Society Scholarship award.
