Sea surface can twist or distort our perception. It can cheat the eye, enhancing or fading some traits. Sirens distort or skew sailors' perceptions through song, luring shipwrecks on the rocky shores of their islands. I have chosen this perspective to design the visual language in Sirens from Ulysses: a new beer brand.
Red Pepper Branding, Brand identity, logo design, UI design
The aim of this project was to create a sleek visual identity that traversed between traditional and modern. The logo design was based on the letter 'RP.' I combined the design with an abstract swimsuit shape, created a simple yet elegant logo-mark.
Rose Castile, Brand identity, package design
In James Joyce's Ulysses episode 11 "Sirens," it tells a dangerous but fascinating relationship between the birdwomen and the sailors. I applied this concept to the visual representation of perfume packaging. Pretty in its look and odor, perfume could contain dangerous ingredients. While the light background color represented surface wonderfulness, the gradient colors signify internal danger. I visualized the tonal variations of the singing sirens in this chapter through diverse typefaces.
The Journey of A Chinese Homosexual, Environment experience, symbol-system design, public art program, diagram mapping
This project expressed my personal journey and identity as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. Designing this public art piece, I incorporated my racial and sexual identities with the underground subway system. The process of coming down from the ground level into the underground level symbolizes my confrontation with my concealed "underground" identities.
World Music Wednesday, Poster Design, typographic design, grid application, intermediate typography
In this project, I organized multiple levels of information for the World Music Wednesday Music Festival. I was inspired by the concept of time and its intricate connection with music. I organized the poster with the abstract conceptions of the clock face and calendar mapping.
Mental Health Notice, 2020, 360° Virtual Reality Video, 4 mins.
This is a virtual reality (VR) video centered on depression. The goal of this project was to make the general public more aware of depression and understand the community that suffers from it. I selected movements and postures of the daily life of community members. I used the circular element to create a profound sense of distance.
Utopia Game, 2021, AI Facial Tracking, 0:37 mins.
I developed a visual system to help viewers visualize emotions through a Utopia game, so that they could better understand and feel how impactful emotions could be on us during the experience. Using AI facial tracking, this game externalized the viewers’ inner intangible emotions through tangible audio and music outputs.
