Sara Selmić is a Balkan artist currently based in Chicago, Illinois. Her research involves bioenergetics, ecology and material exploration. As a spiritual being living a human experience, making objects is a conduit for understanding. Selmić’s emotions and intuition find form to translate energy for the viewer.
This work is deeply rooted in a spiritual connection to land and how we as a humanity consume that land.
Design has become an accessory to the financial growth integral to capitalism, which is systematically linked to human exploitation and environmental destruction leading to an uneven distribution of resources.
I propose a spiritual perception of the land, where it is understood as an extension of ourselves. Our souls are at odds with the systems in which we are forced to partake and this has severed our connection and depleted the earth of its diversity. Systems of resource distribution, material & waste culture are in need of an ecological lens.
