Sofía Fernández Díaz

Master of Fine Arts in Studio, Fiber and Material Studies

Sofía Fernández Díaz (b. 1990) is a multi-disciplinary artist from Mexico City based in Chicago, whose practice looks for memory-material relationships. Sofías’s work is process-based and experimental, embedding itself in hereditary traditional fiber and craft techniques. She often calls upon intuition, meditative labor, and repetition to collect and build objects in a systematic composition inspired by nature.

Parallel to her artistic practice, she has interacted and exchanged ideas with artisans around Mexico while documenting their processes and daily rituals. Through a decade of intimate investigation of ancestral roots, she seeks to unravel and share prehistoric processes and symbology by imparting workshops on natural dyeing and natural pigments.
