Xinyan Wang (Chinese, b. 1995 in Beijing) lives and works in Chicago now. Xinyan Wang obtained her Bachelor’s degree in 2017 from China Central Academy of Fine Arts in the Oil Painting Department, during that time exchange studied in Zurich ZHdK in the New Media department. She earned a Master of Arts in Fourth Studio of Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2020. She is currently pursuing her second Master of Fine Arts degree at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Painting and Drawing department.

The solo exhibitions of Xinyan’s work include “Wang Xinyan: Archaeology of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the Digital Age (2019)” at Frieze London, Asia House; “On Innocence in Ancient Times (2018),” China Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing. In addition, her work has also been exhibited and collected by The Chile National Museum and Panama Museum of Contemporary.

For her, the concrete content of the painting is no longer the focus of attention. What she is more interested in is the strong expression of emotion through the painting language. What matters is how this person or object makes her feel.

My work focuses on the combination of traditional Chinese art and the world today, and depicts current social problems or events from my perspective. As a Chinese and Oriental, my growing background determines that my art is Chinese. I think it is not only an identity, but also reflected in my daily life.

The existence of every object has its existence rationality, that is, the existence is reasonable. Existentialism advocates human-centeredness and respect for human personality and freedom. People are different from each other. The formation of a person’s ideological personality is closely related to the original family, people’s experience, and thought. Each creator is different in his individual thoughts and memories, resulting in different painted images. The subject of painting is not the object itself, but an inadvertent record in life, something that lies between the real and the ideal life boundary.

After summing up and summarizing my previous creative experience, I rekindled my interest in deeper exploration of paintability. I tried to simplify all the necessary details, and focused on depicting the sense of volume in the memory, and the sense of edge of the color gamut. The goal is not to portray concreteness, but to express feelings immersed in memory, and to use abstract techniques to express intuitive emotions.

My work always focuses on life, and I always think that reading and experiencing the world are complementary ways to help artists grow, so I often go to various places to observe and explore. With the transformation of time and space, my creation has always been with me. When I look at the lives of people in this world from the perspective of an artist, I often marvel at the diversity of the world.
