Jazmyn Joi is a visual artist who creates film and video, both narrative and collage based. Originally born in Detroit, MI Jazmyn Joi moved to Charlotte, NC at the age of 6 where she spent most of her adolescence before graduating high school and attending the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Using self captured video, found footage, and celluloid film she visualizes a way to present the contrasts seen in life while also providing a way to re-imagine pre-existing imagery to create a new way of seeing the world. Her creative ideas do not manifest in a structured manner but rather through a pessimistic lens examining Black oppression, colonialism, sexuality, women’s oppression, mental illness, climate change, and other various topics tied to humanity’s flaws. Through this pessimism is a curiosity for the joys of life that allow her to capture and craft various aspects of the human experience.
