Joanne Lagazo is an aspiring architect interested in community engagement, urban planning, and interactive design. She believes that architecture can promote equity and accessibility for all, nurture thriving communities, and connect people back to nature through sustainable design principles. She strives to build a career path aligned with these architectural values and principles.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from the University of Kentucky (2021). She has gained experience in an architectural firm, primarily working on K-12 projects. She is currently pursuing her Master of Architecture at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, graduating in May 2024.

This thesis delves into the transformative potential of integrating ‘third places’ within suburban communities, specifically focusing on Klondike, Louisville, KY. Coined by Ray Oldenburg, the term “third place” refers to informal public spaces that foster social interaction, relaxation, and empowerment. The study investigates how these spaces, through urban design and architecture, can redefine the growth dynamics of suburban neighborhoods.

Key questions addressed include the specific design qualities conducive to successful third places, the impact of these spaces on suburban citizens’ daily lives, and the role of tactical urbanism in their development. Through observational studies and theoretical analysis, the research explores the interface between public and private urban spaces and identifies existing third places for enhancement.

The aim is to encourage suburban communities to reassess their frameworks and incorporate third places to enhance residents’ quality of life. The thesis proposes a masterplan derived from observational data and theoretical insights, aiming to intervene in various scales such as streetscapes, public spaces, and parks. By integrating this design strategy, the suburban community can potentially experience an improvement in urban quality and foster a stronger sense of community.
