who i am online is very different from the person who paints in grad school and goes to galleries and i wish they were better friends. my practice is currently grappling with that and trying to find a way to sublimate the two modes of persona into one portrait using projected online ephemera through a transparent painting substrate. through a curated selection of memetic image/symbol i hope to communicate my fluency in online life to an audience of Very Online people who i feel are not well represented in the fine art world, while also embracing the absurdity and cringe of displaying such symbols in a venerated setting like the gallery. by coopting my own participation in the history of Painting in this way i can break down the barrier in my own mind that causes me to cringe at my online sensibilities. it’s also very funny.
