My practice is centered around understanding space through movement. The repetitive practice that I’ve been developing in the ceramics studio is analogous to the sports training that helped me hone control over my body as a child, but now I move in collaboration with material. A large part of the human experience is the act of inhabiting spaces and collecting objects. Like muscles hold memories of movements in the body, objects hold memories of people or places. Prior to my MFA in ceramics at SAIC, I received a BFA from The University of Michigan where I also studied ecology. Patience, balance, and reciprocity are principles that uphold ecosystems- clay abides by these same rules and enforces them in every ceramicists’ practice. My work is interested in mechanisms of aid and strengthening, but also play and care. I challenge conventional boundaries and perceptions of utilitarian objects by reimagining the functionality of ceramic objects and domestic spaces.
