Shelbye completed an undergraduate degree in architecture from Texas A&M University. During her time at SAIC, she created a new Art Deco tour along Devon Ave. in Chicago, worked in stained glass restoration, and began writing articles for the Chicago Art Deco Society. Shelbye is looking forward to working and making a positive impact in the field of preservation after graduation.
The Glenview Naval Air Base was once the premier Reserve Pilot Training Center for the United States Navy. Between the years of 1937 and 1995, 17,000 pilots were trained here. However to the casual observer, the site is simply a curious combination of remnant and modern retail architecture. The complex history of this site is no longer understood but for the slowly deteriorating blueprints of the demolished buildings. This project aspires to breathe life into this inaccessible historic resource using two methods. The goal of this thesis is to employ best archival practice as well as modern Augmented Reality techniques to honor a pivotal era in naval history that has fallen out of collective memory.
