Artist Statement

Through my artwork, I reflect on my internship experiences providing art therapy to clients during the COVID-19 pandemic and explore the idea of interpersonal connection via online media. I created my first version of Screenshot of the Artist (2020) during my first internship in March 2020. At the time, I had abruptly transitioned from providing in person art therapy to telehealth services. This artwork illustrates online therapy during the pandemic and the feelings of fatigue, isolation, and disconnection that sometimes accompany it.

Bemmy and Grampy (2020) is inspired by residents at my second internship site, a residential care community for older adults. As a result of the COVID-19 stay-at-home orders and advisories, residents at my site have been unable to see their family members face-to-face for many weeks. Bemmy and Grampy is a tribute to older adults who strive to connect with loved ones across distance.
