My work revolves around the concept of self-identity. My paintings are a hybridization between cartoon abstraction and abstract portraits with various gestural marks. My recent works deal with the nature of hybridity. With main usage of oil paint and some charcoal, I am able to portray my understanding of self in a society that labels me differently depending on the beholder.
My paintings consist of pop culture esque references as well as word play of my name in two different languages. All my paintings are heavily based around iconographic images that serves as the drive of the painting. They heavily rely on each other to work together as a series of conceptual paintings. The usage of bunnies and ducks are my response to the cultural context that we find ourselves in. I have been heavily influenced by TL Solien and his cartoon abstraction paintings. His usage of characters being melted with the painting beautifully has piqued my interest. George Condo’s abstract portraitures allow me to think about different aspects of my concept to portray as well. I am currently looking into utilizing pop culture iconographic to represent the hybrid nature of first generation immigrants.
I was born in Korea and raised in Texas. As a son of an artist, I’ve been taught with traditional background. I came to SAIC to learn more about the contemporary practice and dive in the world of art.
