The Service Bureau offers 3 kinds of binding: Saddle Stitch, Coil/Wire-O and Perfect Bound.

Saddle Stitch Booklets

Saddle Stitching refers to a very popular book binding method in which folded sheets are gathered together one inside the other and then stapled through the fold line with wire staples. The staples pass through the folded crease from the outside and are clinched between the centermost pages.

Standard sizes available in most media.
5.5″x 8.5″, 8.5″x 11″, 11″x 17″

Larger sizes are available for specific media only. (Hammermill, Neenah Solar White, Futura Gloss and French Paper)
12” x 18”, 12.5″x 19″, 13”x 19”

Your document should have the same number of pages as what is being ordered. So, if you are ordering a 16-page booklet, then your document should also contain 16 pages. The page count must be divisible by 4 or the imposition software will place blank pages.

The first two pages and the last two pages of your document will be your booklet cover. If you do not wish to have any printing on the inside covers of your booklet, then simply make those pages blank pages in your document.

File Preparation

File Type: PDF (Click for PDF Settings)

Page Limit: Approximately 40 pages

Standard Sizes with No Cutting/No Bleeds/Not Borderless

Single pages: You do not have to paginate (impose) your booklet, or to lay it out in spreads if your booklet doesn’t requires cutting. Our printing software will handle all page ordering and imposition.

Set up the document size of your document to be the final size of your booklet.

For example, if you are ordering a 5.5×8.5” booklet, saddle stitched, then setup your pages to be 5.5×8.5” each, do not setup your pages 2-up on an 8.5×11“ sheet. If you want your finished booklet to have 16 pages, then your document should also have 16 pages.

Borderless Booklets or Non Standard Size to be Cut Down: Print Booklet Export Process

If your booklet requires trimming because it has a full bleed or it ends up being a specific size that is smaller than the sheet it is printed on then you will need to do one extra step before when exporting your document.

Our laser printers are unable to print full bleed so will automatically leave a 1/8″ white edge or border around the pages of your booklet. If you do not what the white edge you will need to set up your file so that it can be cut down after printing.

See our page on Borders and Bleeds to learn more about setting up InDesign for bleeds.

If you have artwork that bleeds to the edge of the printed page and you want us to trim down the excess, then you need to make your sheet size large enough to include crop marks and bleed.

For example, if your finished size is 5.5″x8.5″, the document page size might be 6.5×9.5 to include both bleeds and crops. This will also mean that we will need to print your booklet on a larger sheet than 8.5″x11″ to accommodate the cut marks. This will affect your price since the booklet will be printed on larger paper and cutting charges will be added to the total.

Professional page layout software such as Adobe InDesign has built in ways to do this for you.

The Print Booklet feature allows you to impose your document to include the bleed needed for borderless images, it also allows the larger paper size available in the Service Bureau Print Driver to be used.

Step by step instructions of how to export your files are available in our Everything You Need to Know About Saddle Stitch guide.

 Turnaround

Standard turnaround is 24 hours. There are no Rush options for Laser jobs.

We do not do “proofs” before running larger jobs. If you are running a large job and want to see a proof, turn in a job for only 1 copy of your document. This will be completed in 24 hours. Once you are satisfied with the outcome you will then turn in the final order for the number of copies you want.

   Order Submission

Saddle stitch books are ordered using the Laser printing order form

Please enter the total number of pages (not sheets of paper), including any cover pages. Everything should be included in one working PDF at the size you wish to print.

Choose a paper from the drop down menu for the cover and interior pages. They can be the same if that is your choice.

You have a few variations to choose from for folding, stapling and finishing.

  • You can have us print without folding or stapling. This means you will be folding and stapling yourself.
  • You can do the half fold with no stapling.
  • You can have us fold, staple and cut. We will only cut booklets if ordered in quantities over 5.

Page Count Limitations

Paper thickness affects the thickness of the booklet and therefore Saddle Stitched Booklets may have page count limits. Depending on number of pages in the booklet, the paper choices for the cover and interior pages you may find that the booklet is unable to be stapled or close when laying on the table.

Please discuss with a technician or student worker at the counter if you are considering printing a saddle stitch book with more than 40 pages. We can advise on paper selection to minimize the issues once printed and to make sure the booklet will be able to be stapled in the machine.

Coil/Wire-O Binding

What is Coil Binding?
Coil Binding, also known as Spiral binding, is a commonly used book binding style for documents. Coil Binding uses a coil that is fed through small holes punched in the pages and cover of the book. The coil holds the pages and cover as an assembly yet still allows them to open freely. One of the primary user benefits of a coil bound book is that the pages can be opened a full 360 degrees (cover to cover). This allows an open book to fold back upon itself and yet still remain flat, so it stays open for easy reference and yet takes up minimal room on a desk or table. This binding style is durable and is often used for books like notebooks, handbooks, photo books and portfolios. Coil binding spines are available in a multitude of colors to best suit your project needs. Wire-O binding is similar in technique but uses a slightly different wire loop system to secure the book. We recommend Coil binding over Wire-O binding because the coils stand up to long term use better and are available in more sizes and colors.

Coil: Our plastic coils are available in 10 colors. Yellow, Fuchsia, Reflex Blue, Clear, Mint Green, Teal, Orange, White, Black and Red.

We have coils that range from 6mm-15mm in diameter, so we can make books up to generally ½ inch thick (about 160 sheets of text weight paper).

Custom colors and larger sizes are available for order here – any coils purchased from this website will work with our machine’s pitch of 4:1.

Wire-O: Uses a twin loop system. We have a number of color choices. Please stop in to see our samples before ordering. Black, white, red, green, blue, silver and gold.

  File Preparation

File Format: PDF (Click for PDF Settings), export as Single pages (not spreads). If there is any information that goes to the edge of the page, please provide crop marks and a bleed so we can cut it down properly.

Maximum Number of Pages: 100 (Thinner papers, such as bond paper, may be able to do more)

Margins: We suggest leaving a gutter margin of at least ¼ inch on the side you intend to bind, this leaves space for punching holes needed for binding without cutting off your images or text

Size: The coils themselves are 11-12 inches in length, so any books taller than that will have the coil centered in the middle of the book unless otherwise specified.

Covers: Your cover will simply be page 1 of your pdf, and the back cover will be the last page of your pdf. We also offer the option to include a clear plastic cover (for books up to 11x17in) and a card-stock front/back cover to make your book more sturdy.

24 Hours. Depending on the volume of booklets and any finishing you are requesting the turnaround may increase. If you have a deadline you are hoping to meet with a large personal or departmental order please contact before submitting so we can determine a timeline for your job.

Perfect Binding

What is Perfect Binding?
Perfect Binding is a form of bookbinding in which the books pages are bound by gluing single sheets rather than by sewing or stapling. With this binding method, the pages and cover are glued together at the spine with a strong yet flexible glue. The other three sides of the book are then trimmed as needed to give them clean “perfect” edges.

Perfect bound books look clean and professional. Ideal for show catalogs, portfolios, photo albums, small run comics, and self published artists books.

Size: Any size you want, so long as the page and crop marks fit onto a 13″x19″ piece of paper.

Most books are 8″x10″ or smaller. Anything larger will take longer and cost more. See the Oversized Books, Inkjet Covers, and Lamination section below.

Paper: Hammermill Bond or Sterling Gloss Text for the body; Hammermill Cardstock, Sterling Gloss Cover.
You can supply your own paper or prints as well, but some papers won’t work in our printers or binder, so check with the Bureau Staff first.

If you’re getting more than 20 books, please speak with a Technician before placing your order. Unfortunately, the binding process here at the Service Bureau is all by hand which takes a considerable amount of production time and pulls staff away from their other duties. For this reason, we reserve the right to deny certain amounts for Perfect Binding requests.

2 separate files – a file for the cover, and a file for the body of the book. Both files need crop marks and bleed marks.
The body of your book must be single pages, not spreads.

File Format
All files must be exported and submitted as PDF (Click for PDF Settings).

Proofs
We highly recommend getting a proof of your book. Proofs take 3 days. The rest of the books are finished 6 days after you approve the proof. Proofs are 1/2 price if you approve the order, full price if you decide to cancel. Proofs are labeled with a sticker on the insider cover.

Spine Calculator: Refer to the table to estimate how wide the spine will be. If you want text on your spine, be sure to make it small enough to fit. *We highly recommend a proof when using text on the spine.
