This includes Latex + Inkjet on the roll media and all sheet sizes with Riso and Laser printing.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>All Laser and Riso prints will have a roughly 0.125-0.25&#8243; white border, we recommend to size your file to be smaller or to leave a white border on your images.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">You can also select <strong>&#8216;Fit to Media&#8217;<\/strong> when selecting the Media type and we will shrink or enlarge your file to fit the paper size you selected.<br \/>\nIf you need your file to be <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.saic.edu\/servicebureau\/home\/help_center\/bleeds-borders\/\">full-bleed\/borderless<\/a> you must provide bleed and crop marks (and likely select a larger sheet to accommodate the crop marks).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4 id=\"pro\"><strong>PRO&#8217;s AND CON&#8217;s OF SADDLE STITCHING<\/strong><\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><strong>Pros:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Inexpensive:<\/strong> \u00a0Saddle stitching is among the least expensive binding options for booklet materials.<\/li>\n<li><b>Laying Flat:<\/b>\u00a0Unlike perfect bound binding, saddle stitched documents lay flat very easily when opened.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li><b>Quick To Make:<\/b>\u00a0The turnaround time on producing saddle-stitched materials is very fast because there is no glue heating and drying process involved.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><strong>Cons:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li><b>Less Substantial:<\/b>\u00a0The binding of a saddle-stitch for a mass-produced document does wear on the paper with time and use.<\/li>\n<li><b>Limited Pages:<\/b>\u00a0The nature of saddle-stitch limits the number of pages possible to include due to the spine fold in the bound materials.<\/li>\n<li><b>Lower Quality Look:<\/b>\u00a0While a brochure may look stunning, saddle stitch binding will keep it looking like a brochure or magazine. It is designed to be a less expensive bind typically for time-sensitive material.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4 id=\"generalguidelines\"><strong>GENERAL GUIDELINES<\/strong><\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Your file in Adobe InDesign should be setup in the order you intend it to be read<\/strong> (page 1 is the cover, last page is the back cover), imposition (ordering pages for printing) happens during the export process for Full-Bleed books and during the printing process for No-Bleed books.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span class=\"s1\">Saddle stitch books<\/span> are printed on the Laser printers. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">Due to the nature of color laser printing, colors will shift throughout the day and from day to day. We are unable to exactly match prints made at separate times. <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">Not all visible elements are able to be printed, some vibrant colors and gradients are not able to be rendered well. Using the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.saic.edu\/servicebureau\/pdfpreset\/\">recommended PDF export settings &amp; color profile (CMYK &#8211; Coated Gracol 2006)<\/a> will help get the closet possible print.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Most of the papers we stock are available for Saddle Stitch Books.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Paper samples are available outside the Service Bureau (Sharp 1111).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\nStandard sizes available in most media.<br \/>\n5.5&#8243;x 8.5&#8243;, 8.5\u2033x 11\u2033, 11\u2033x 17\u2033<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px\">Larger sizes are available for specific media only. (<br \/>\nHammermill, Neenah Solar White, Futura Gloss and French Paper)<br \/>\n12\u201d x 18\u201d, 12.5&#8243;x 19&#8243;, 13\u201dx 19\u201d ( Hammermill Only)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><strong>A Saddle Stitched booklet needs to have pages in multiples of 4<\/strong>. This is because each sheet of paper, double sided and folded, will automatically add four pages to your booklet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"padding-left: 40px\">This means that your file should have a number of 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, etc. pages. If it is not in multiples of four the software will add a blank page to your document, throwing off your order and causing it to print incorrectly. If you do not wish to have any printing on the inside covers of your booklet, then simply make those pages\u00a0blank pages in your document.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">You can designate a thicker paper for your cover and use text weight for the interiors. We trim all the books edges so after being bound your artwork goes to the exact edge and the intended size of the book.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px\"><strong>Full Bleed Booklets:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px\">Will require a bleed area and marks for cutting added to your file. You will use the Print Booklet Exporting process for submission. We will be cutting your book to a finished size.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px\"><strong>No Bleed Booklets:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px\">Does not require the addition of a bleed area. Files are submitted as single sheets. Your booklets are printed on standard sheet sizes and not cut.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px\">-&gt; If you create your pages with images that extend to the edge of the page WITHOUT adding a full bleed margin, your pages will still have a white border.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"padding-left: 80px\"><span class=\"s1\">You can order your books <\/span>\u2018Folded But Not Stapled\u2019 if you want to bind yourself or add additional pages.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.saic.edu\/servicebureau\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2016\/04\/submission.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1737\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.saic.edu\/servicebureau\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2016\/04\/submission-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"50\" height=\"50\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.saic.edu\/servicebureau\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2016\/04\/submission-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/sites.saic.edu\/servicebureau\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2016\/04\/submission-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/sites.saic.edu\/servicebureau\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2016\/04\/submission.png 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 50px) 100vw, 50px\" \/><\/a><\/span><b>File Preparation<\/b><\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">Detailed file setup and exporting instructions are available in our <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.saic.edu\/servicebureau\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/SaddleStitch_2024.pdf\">How to Booklet for Saddle Stitch Books.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">File Type:<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.saic.edu\/servicebureau\/pdfpreset\/\">PDF (Click for PDF Settings)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">Page Limit:<strong> Approximately 40 pages<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5 class=\"p1\"><b>No Bleed Booklets &#8211; <\/b><strong>Standard Size Sheets with No Cutting + Borders\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n<hr style=\"padding-left: 40px\" \/>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><strong>Single pages:<\/strong>\u00a0You do not have to paginate (impose) your booklet, or to lay it out in spreads if your booklet doesn&#8217;t requires cutting. Our printing software will handle all page ordering and imposition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"padding-left: 40px\">Set up the document size of your document to be the final size of your booklet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"padding-left: 70px\">For example, if you are ordering a 5.5&#215;8.5\u201d booklet, saddle stitched, then\u00a0setup your pages to be 5.5&#215;8.5\u201d each, <strong>do not<\/strong> setup your pages 2-up on an 8.5&#215;11\u201c sheet. If you want your finished booklet to have 16 pages, then your document should also have 16 pages.<\/p>\n<hr style=\"padding-left: 40px\" \/>\n<h5 class=\"p1\"><strong>Full Bleed Booklet &#8211; Borderless Booklets or Non Standard Size to be Cut Down<\/strong><\/h5>\n<hr style=\"padding-left: 40px\" \/>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><strong>If your booklet requires trimming because it has a <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.saic.edu\/servicebureau\/home\/guides-downloads\/bleeds-borders\/\">full bleed<\/a> or it ends up being a specific size that is smaller than the sheet it is printed on then you will need to do one extra step before when exporting your document.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"padding-left: 80px\">Our laser printers are unable to print <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.saic.edu\/servicebureau\/home\/guides-downloads\/bleeds-borders\/\">full bleed<\/a> so will automatically leave a 1\/8&#8243; white edge or border around the pages of your booklet. If you do not what the white edge you will need to set up your file so that it can be cut down after printing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"padding-left: 80px\">See our page on <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.saic.edu\/servicebureau\/home\/guides-downloads\/bleeds-borders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Borders and Bleeds<\/a>\u00a0to learn more about setting up InDesign for bleeds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"padding-left: 80px\">If you have artwork that bleeds to the edge of the printed page and you want us to trim down the excess, then you need to make your sheet size large enough to include crop marks and bleed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"padding-left: 110px\">For example, if your finished size is 5.5&#8243;x8.5&#8243;, the document page size might be 6.5&#215;9.5 to include both bleeds and crops. This will also mean that we will need to print your booklet on a larger sheet than 8.5&#8243;x11&#8243; to accommodate the cut marks. This means you will be folding and stapling yourself.<\/li>\n<li>You can do the half fold with no stapling.<\/li>\n<li>You can have us fold, staple and cut. We will only cut booklets if ordered in quantities over 5.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5 style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><strong>Page Count Limitations<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Paper thickness affects the thickness of the booklet and therefore Saddle Stitched Booklets may have page count limits. Depending on number of pages in the booklet, the paper choices for the cover and interior pages you may find that the booklet is unable to be stapled or close when laying on the table.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">Please discuss with a technician or student worker at the counter if you are considering printing a saddle stitch book with more than 40 pages. So, if your document is 8.5&#215;11&#8243; and has 32 pages, you will be charged for 16 11&#215;17&#8243; spreads (Which will be printed double sided on 8 sheets of papers).
