Blank Topographies
Preformed resin maps and paint
Each year, Becker selects a topography relief map of the most expensive mountain real estate in the US as determined by market values. The maps are purchased pre-formed from commercial websites where collectors trade them in a hobbyist market that mirrors the luxury real estate market. Once painted the same color of the wall, the maps conceal the symbolic language of land-based capital—the markers for towns, roads, and businesses, which define the area’s economic worth, have disappeared. The minimalist images draw a relationship between the commerce of art, land, and the false neutrality of maps, questioning what is valued and why.
