Bio
Berfin creates conceptual garments and interactive installations, drawing from her background in scenic and costume design for film and theater. Her expansive installations encourage participants to let go of their identity and obligations, leave human-controlled reality behind, and develop a bit of awe for life and nature. After surviving cancer at age 17, Berfin started questioning the surroundings that humans have created for themselves. Her work centers on challenging people to expand their horizons and reevaluate the concrete world that consumes them, inviting them to be open and curious about their environment and to actively engage with it.
“METAMORPHOSIS”
Collection Inspiration | Artist Statement
Some people are able to look at society from above and not become consumed by the everyday world. They are open to new experiences with nature, curious about the world, and fearless about the unknown. The easiest way for adults to experience this feeling is to travel somewhere they've never been. By bringing adults into an unfamiliar setting, I give them space to discover the unknown. Away from their societal expectations and obligations, they end up creating a new universe for themselves. For my project, Metamorphosis, I created new environments using images of nature from various parts of the world in addition to projections, sounds, and smells. Most important, my garments become a part of these natural surroundings. When worn, these garments invite participants to rediscover their body within this newly established environment.
