Bio

Kelley entered the Post-Baccalaureate Program with an undergraduate degree in biological sciences, along with experience working as a lung cancer research technician. As a designer who bridges the realms of science and fashion, Kelley applies her hands-on research experience and analytical skills to create garments that incorporate a conceptual approach, intricate hand embellishments, and sophisticated construction and patternmaking. She is interested in the idea of hybrids and how seemingly contrasting elements can blend together in harmony. Balance is a key theme throughout her work, which she explores across color, shape, and proportion.

“Toward Equilibrium”

Collection Inspiration | Artist Statement
My collection, Toward Equilibrium, is inspired by the idea of clothing as a membrane that envelops our bodies. I looked at how the cell membrane carefully monitors internal and external conditions in order to maintain balance. Our clothing is often the first interaction we have with others, with the inherent power to draw people in or push them away. My garments reflect the process of navigating one’s environment toward achieving equilibrium. Each garment conveys a snapshot in time of the cell membrane as it either eliminates from within or takes in from the environment, all with the objective of maintaining balance.
