“Ancestral Prayers”
Concept |
In the African American community, when we worship, it is otherworldly and can feel like a call back to our roots. An outer body experience or actually an inner body experience connecting us to our self, to our ancestors. Transporting us across the sea of time. Gospel music lifts me up and I feel the need to worship even when there’s stillness. I find my body unable to stand still. Moving and swaying as if it was trying to tell me something. Ancestral Prayers is rooted in connection and explores what it means to be tied to something unknown to us. The unknown could be familiar.
Bio |
Adreain Guillory was born and raised in Saginaw Michigan. Growing up, he was surrounded by 4 generations of strong women that forever inspired and influenced him. Guillory has always loved whimsical romantic stories like when the girl goes to the ball and loses a slipper but he often wondered how the story would be told with people who looked like him instead. This underrepresentation fueled his need to create more inclusive work. Through his art making process, he’d like to create work that makes is focused but not limited to other african americans. Things like a woman of color in a couture gown was unheard of. He wants to curate a world where that’s the norm.
