“Bite Me” is an exploration of footwear design converging with the artist’s medical background. The work is an idiosyncratic response to current sneaker trends, reflecting on the conceptual potential of this shoe category. In 2019, materials needed for customizable athletic sole-making are largely unavailable to independent artists working outside the footwear industry, and “Bite Me” displays the discovery of flexible, durable materials used in the dental industry which are both accessible to the public and appropriate for functional footwear. The phrase “Bite Me” is a cheeky message repeated on the sole and the backstrap, playfully relaying the idea of stunting exclusive designs. The hand-casted sole leaves an imprint on impressionable surfaces (sand, snow, fresh concrete), spawning a memorable mark among trite tracks.
