“Wrapped Up”

I always felt that I needed more in order to be grounded, and at the least, equivalent to my surroundings. In my head and mind I am not enough, but when I dress myself in intricate and extravagant clothing to go out every weekend, I feel like a brand new person. I feel like a wrapped-up present that excites the people around me, making them happy – yet inside, I still feel as if I fall short.

Claire Lyons is a fourth-year fashion design student at SAIC. While she loves pattern-making, designing, embellishing everything, and making people laugh here and there, her love for creating dance costumes began when she was 15 years old when she started her own dance costuming business. It is still deeply rooted within her creative practice of fashion design and is something she enjoys going back to. In the meantime, she finds excitement in working with experimental materials such as party ribbon and tinsel, to create her own textiles.
