This garment, “Marine Pollution,” is a protest of the way humans have been treating our oceans. Overall, the garment is meant to entice viewers at first glance, but once they get close enough, educate them about the disrespect we are showing our earth and its creatures. The garment is heavily focused on the way marine pollution negatively effects the albatross species in particular. The albatross is said to be one of the two seabird species most heavily effected by plastic consumption. In order to portray the beauty, which existed before humans trashed our oceans, the front of the garment is inspired by the beautiful wings of the albatross and also the ocean waves themselves. As the viewer walks around the garment, the beauty will slowly be taken over by the horrors of marine pollution. The back of this garment will display what an albatross looks like when it dies from consuming plastic, since approximately 90% of seabird species consume plastic in there lifetime. Within the manipulations of the fabric, there are several QR codes to be scanned, in order to make the garment more interactive and informative for the viewer. I want to be sure that anyone looking at the garment can be educated on the matter, and also given the tools they need to contribute to both the ocean clean up and the effort to limit plastic waste. Because of the amount of human waste in the ocean, marine animals are actually attracted to plastic and making it part of their diets. It is time for a change, so my hope is that this garment will serve as an eye-opening call for action. We need to start protecting this earth and treating it with the respect it deserves.
