My garment develops around the color of this year, “living coral.” Although many fashion designers, artists, corporations, and others started to incorporate the color of “living coral” in their works and products, they still seem to lack interest in the true color of corals in 2019. 50% of the corals in the largest coral reef on earth, the Great Barrier Reef have been bleached to death since 2016 and 19% of world wide coral population have perished. Rather than the beautiful, vivid pink, corals turned into decaying brown and lifeless white colors. This piece is my own take on the color of the year, wanting to bring the color of corals in present day into people’s attention as a ritual or a wish for restoring the rich, biodiverse corals back to life.
