Most people are familiar with the binarized cliche of needlework. My piece showcases the subversive use of needlework used by Naval officers in WWII in regards to their ‘Forget me not’ pincushions they would make for their loved ones at home. I wanted to infuse this look with vintage queer themes one might associate with the queer sailor. I used multiple forms of embellishment and embroidery to create the decorative dickie, as well as the hat and corset to compliment it. The themes include Tom of Finland and traditional Nautical tattoos. Some techniques used Tambour embroidery, Goldwork, beading, crochet, and clothing construction.
