My name is Kit Jones and I am a fashion artist and textile designer in my third year of the fashion body builder program. My practice consists of focusing on the process of making clothing slowly through textile manipulation and creating distressed natural fibers. My work focuses on upcycling and sourcing preloved materials as well as natural materials to focus on creating sustainable pieces that are meant to last and be treasured. It is because of this that I pride myself on creating wearable art that is meant for special occasions, costuming, and photoshoots.
Leather Vest, Upcycled Leather
This leather vest was an upcycled leather jacket that I made into a corset top for my accessory design class. Through drafting and manipulating the leather I was able to make a reworked piece out of preloved leather.
Suit Top, Suited Garment
This suit top was made for my construction 1 class. I used cotton suiting and manipulated a basic suit pattern to create cut outs to create a twist on the traditional suit.
Inhospitable, Top and Skirt
I made this top and skirt for my integral fashion studio class. I used cheesecloth, burlap and cotton gauze for the fabrics and manipulated the fabrics through embroidery, burning, stamping, stacking, distressing, and dying. Through this work I marry the critique of our manmade disasters with sustainable natural fibers to study the decay of inhospitable land after the earth takes back over.
Triangular Skirt, Assigned Shape
This skirt is based on an assigned shape for my fashion design class. With the shape of a triangle I was able to make a skirt that explored the shape while still reading as a wearable garment. Using the negative space I was able to highlight areas of the body in their triangular form.
Bean Nighes Refrain, Folklore Project
This dress is for my Scottish folklore collection for my Runway Meets Runway professional practice class. I have been studying folk stories and legends of my Scottish heritage in which I am trying to make this dress look wet to mirror the story of Bean Nighe. Using cheesecloth I have been ripping and sewing wrinkles in the fabric and securing with interfacing as well as adding layers to create a flowing look. I also added red beading, embroidery, grommets, and dye to create a bloody effect as the story goes that bean nighe washes the blood out of the clothing of whoever will die next as an omen of death.
Sweater and Skirt Belt, Knitwear and Accessories
This sweater was made for my hand knitwear class out of kidsilk mohair. I used large needles to create a gappy look. The skirt belt was made for my Accessory Design class and I wanted to make it like a micro skirt but even more exaggerated to the point that it's a belt. I used denim fabric and a buckle with pleats to create the look.
Mini Skirt, Construction Final
This mini skirt was made for my Fashion Construction 1 class. I used upholstery and teal cotten as well as beading and bows on the side to create a cute look. I also manipulated the basic skirt pattern to come down at the sides and curve towards the center.
My projects are an amalgamation of my commitment to textiles and manipulations through sustainable and sculptural art. Making fashion slowly and with care to create treasured pieces that explore concepts and fiber experimentations.
