“Life swings like a pendulum between pain and boredom.” – Arthur Schopenhauer. The keyword is Struggle. Imagine life as a train journey. After passing through a dark tunnel, you hope to see light ahead. But its tunnels after tunnel. More tunnels. The process of a cicada shedding its skin mirrors this struggle. Each time it sheds its skin, it wrestles until the fifth time when it gains wings. What comes next? Mating, reproducing, and eventually succumbing amidst the chorus of cicadas.
For the bottom part, I chose a tight, wrinkled texture, symbolizing the shell I shed, the old self, the past struggle. For the top part, I opted for a fuller shape, representing a lighter state, hinting at new beginnings but still shadowed by darkness. The cicada wings on the lower body cannot truly lift me from despair; they’re just empty shells. This attire is for two individuals and can portray three stages. The first is one person wearing the top, symbolizing a self still clouded by lingering darkness despite renewal. The second is another person wearing the skirt, with wings spreading upward, signifying being tightly bound yet hopeful for liberation. The third is one person wearing both top and skirt, with another person caught in the wing skeleton at the skirt’s front, illustrating the struggle to break free and embrace a new life.
