The heart of my practice is rooted in my upbringing as a child of laborers merged with my personal experience with in-betweenness and ambivalence with regard to fluctuation. My goal is to highlight experiences that mostly go unnoticed by the rest of the world through the reinvention of traditional utilitarian garments into elegant forms that break down traditional boundaries between gender, class and culture. An integral part of this is my incorporation of and focus on using natural material within the garments, specifically cellulose-based fibers, to serve as a link back to my late grandfather’s agricultural work. Through these narratives and materials, my objective is to merge worlds in order to elevate and represent the voices of those who often feel alienated or unseen within the society due to the metaphorical borderlands in which they exist.
