Cecilia Tyrrell is an artist originally from London, UK. The following artefacts are records of Tyrrell’s exploration into virtual and physical space through online and video installation. Her work uses sound to illuminate processes and systems that go unnoticed by the human experience, drawing upon ecology and psychogeography to explore personal and historical memory archives.

Recently Cecilia’s found herself looking at the topography of the UK coast line and its constantly evolving identity, the result of which, Sirens Dawn; A video/installation revolving around a dormant sound mirror on the South East Coast of England. The mirror is positioned on the edge of a cliff facing out away from land, it waits and listens, quietly detecting radio and maritime signals.

Blurring the boundaries between land and sea, Sirens Dawn creates a seascape in constant flux with its identity, ever changing, always in motion. Sonic topography inspired and partly arranged from recordings made at a sound mirror on the South East Coast of England (UK). The mirror itself stands dormant as it waits, facing out away from land. Sound markers and sonic echos, still it listens, quietly detecting.

Origins, 2020, video.

Cartography, caves, oracles and vessels, Origins exists as a collection of animations, born from a single pulsing orb. Originally intended as a multi-surfaced installation, the work has now shifted and transformed to an online presence for the viewer to immerse themselves within and explore.

The UK (where I’m from) is an Island surrounded by water. I’m drawn to the area that exist between the land and the sea. Marsh land, fens, wetlands; this ‘space’ has many different names. There is a tension here, It is in constant flux with its identity, ever changing, always in motion. Marks made on the land through weather or the re-shaping by peoples presence; A tug of war over who or what has the stronger hand in the Topography of the coast. Anthropogenic or meteorologic, there is an age defying dialogue woven through the natural and the man made.
