Born and raised in Hong Kong, Cherry Tung is currently conducting her MFA at The School of the Art Institute Chicago (SAIC). Prior to moving to the US, she graduated with a BA in Fine Arts from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in 2020.

As a female artist from Hong Kong, Cherry’s work revolves around politics and minor power dynamics that are easily ignored. The concepts of her art are dark and heavy, but they are visually beautiful, delicate, or cute. Cherry focuses on painting and ceramic sculptures. In terms of ceramics, she is specialized in making sculptures through plaster mold making, slip-casting porcelain, and mixing special effect glazes. While in her painting practice, she does Chinese ink painting on silk (gongbi), oil painting, watercolor, egg tempera, casein, and acrylic. She is attracted to delicate, precious, and translucent materials.

In the Field Museum, taxidermy are arranged in different poses to portray hunting and mating moments. When these two individual animals were alive, they were maybe strangers who never met. Maybe they survived and died in different time periods. After they died, people collected them and made their dead bodies act like one is attacking the other. The bodies of animals are frozen in an imaginative moment that never happens in the real world.

Pomegranate patterns are painted on the handcuffs. In Chinese tradition, pomegranate represent fertility, the wish for having more babies (particularly male children). Handcuffs are a tool to restrain people, and porcelain is fragile. These concepts are actually fragile, but nobody wants to break it. Porcelain handcuffs are inspired by Xuzhou chained woman incident. A woman was kidnapped to poor village in China, raped and gave birth to eight children. She has chains and locks on her neck to prevent her escaping.
