Christian Gutierrez was born and raised in El Paso, Texas. Currently, he is living in Chicago, working on his MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His work is process-oriented and heavily influenced by failure, iteration, and intuition. Through process, image, and object, he investigates the interactions and possibilities of what found and collected material might offer past its intended purpose.
My practice is primarily rooted in process, chance, and intuition. I am interested in objects, ephemera, and images sourced and collected from second-hand stores or salvaged from my environment to see potential beyond their initial use while still noting their history.
Assembling objects/images or repurposing tools and materials, I aim to create a new narrative for these subjects. The process of creating this new story is both arbitrary and systematic. However, Images become modified and reproduced through multiple labor-intensive printmaking processes.
Objects and Materials are considered as matrixes or references for the image but also hold the possibility of extending the conversation to the three dimensions and other senses creating new questions, observations, and connections.
